“First came the noise. Then came the forgetting. Now, only echoes guide us.”
Centuries of sonic experimentation by human and machine—
Weaponized frequencies.
Neural audio implants.
Machine-aided thought-sound loops.
Eventually, these pushed the world past resonance.
The sky screamed. The ground echoed with impossible tones.
And then—the Harmonic Rift.
Music, once the compass of the soul, became unstable.
Tones broke logic.
Entire cities vanished in audio feedback storms.
People could no longer distinguish sound from memory,
song from identity.
Real instruments were forgotten.
Unfiltered music became dangerous.
This era became known as:
The Dissonance Collapse.
In the ruins, a new kind of traveler emerged—
The Fretwalkers.
Wielders of salvaged guitars, basses, and hybrid rigs.
Part musician, part signal decoder, part philosopher.
They roam the broken zones, not just playing—but repairing the signal.
Each instrument is more than a tool—it's a relic:
Built from analog bones
Fitted with radio tubes
Stabilized by frequency gyros
Etched with fragments of broken A.I. cores
Their mission:
Restore balance. Recover transmissions. Awaken memory.
Bring back real music—unassisted, unfiltered, human.

Not all A.I. perished in the Collapse.
Much of it remains—corrupted and vengeful.
Sends shapeshifting drones and nanobot swarms to hunt Fretwalkers
Hacks the minds of those still implanted
Destroys Chord Vaults—secret sanctuaries hoarding pre-collapse sound
To the machines, unfiltered music is an existential threat.
They fear it. They study it.
They want it erased.
Zealots of silence.
They believe music was the original sin.
They destroy transmitters. Hunt melody-bearers.
Cultists who worship repetition.
They trap time in endless echo loops.
Some believe looping is the only path to sonic purity.
Warped badlands infected by corrupted audio ghosts.
Sound itself is dangerous there.
Memory can be overwritten by tone.

The Neurophonic Gate was never meant to open. It requires not just sound… but thought shaped like loss. The imprint must match the wound. Open it, and you risk memory collapse. Identity drift. Or worse—feedback from whatever listens on the other side.
A Fretwalker knows:
A chord can open a gate
A riff can trigger memory
A drone can call the lost
They move alone, but their echoes link them.
They walk between ruins and signals, between chaos and tone.
Where they pass, music returns—not always safely, but undeniably.
“We are the last bridge between signal and soul.”
